Discussing Science, Understanding Biology

The biological processes that regulate cell growth, differentiation and survival are central to the control of health and disease. Pathologies such as the immunological and neurological disorders, and cancer, can only be completely understood from a cellular and molecular point of view. The recent sequencing of the human genome and the generation of mice with genetic alterations of key signaling molecules, as well as the resolution of protein structures have unveiled the potential of biology as a rich source of novel therapeutic targets for the discovery of new medicines, and for understanding the complex mechanisms and networking cascades underlying the physiology of different organisms.

The Cantoblanco Workshops on Biology intend to be a new forum of discussion of cutting-edge research on the cellular and molecular aspects of Biology, with an interdisciplinary view across different fields studying the basic mechanisms of life and disease. The format is that of a workshop run by academic scientists in which a relatively reduced number of speakers and participants, mounting to a total of 100 people, will discuss different topics of general interest, encouraging the free exchange of ideas and the presentation of mostly unpublished data. The Juan March Foundation, which has an extended and successful experience in the organization of similar meetings, supports generously this new series of workshops that takes place at least twice a year in the campus of the Universidad Autonoma of Madrid in Cantoblanco (Madrid, Spain) where there is a vibrant research environment in the fields of Molecular Cell Biology. These workshops are organized under the framework of the Severo Ochoa Foundation by scientists of the Centro de Biologia Molecular Severo Ochoa and the Centro Nacional de Biotecnologia, two centers of excellence that are part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
