2016 07 01 Fiona M Watt minEn los últimos 30 años estudios en los procesos de homeostásis en la piel, el órgano más extenso de nuestro cuerpo, han contribuído de manera determinante a nuestra comprensión de la biología de las células madre. La piel está formada por dos capas, la capa externa, o epidermis, formada por un epitelio estratificado y las estructuras asociadas (como folículos pilosos o glándulas sudoríparas), y la dermis, situada por debajo de la epidermis, y separada de la misma por una membrana basal altamente organizada. Estas estructuras están formadas por un número relativamente discreto de tipos celulares diferenciados, que derivan de varias poblaciones de células madre situadas en distintos nichos en la piel. El grupo de Fiona Watt ha contribuído de manera decisiva a la identificación de las distintas poblaciones de células madre que dan lugar a las células de la piel. Sus estudios han permitido la identificación de marcadores específicos para cada uno de los tipos de células madre de la piel, y han contribuído a la comprensión de los mecanismos moleculares involucrados en controlar el comportamiento de las células madre, tanto en condiciones de homeostásis, como en situaciones patológicas. Fiona Watt dirige desde 2012 el Centro de Medicina Regenerativa y Células Madre del King’s College London, y entre otras muchas distinciones es miembro de EMBO y de la Royal Society.

 


 

In the last thirty years, studies on the skin have greatly contributed to our understanding of stem cell biology. The skin is composed by two layers, the externally located epidermis and its adnexal structures (hair follicles and sweat glands), and the dermis, located just below. These structures are formed by a discrete number of differentiated cell types that derive from stem cells located at different niches within this organ. The work from Fiona Watt and her group has decisively contributed over these years to the identification of the stem cell populations essential for skin homeostasis and function. They have identified markers for each of the stem cell populations in the skin, followed their dynamics of differentiation and uncovered many of the molecular mechanisms involved in the control of stem cell behaviour, not only under conditions of normal skin homeostasis, but also under pathological conditions. Fiona Watt is, since 2012, Director for the Centre for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine at King’s College London. She is an EMBO Member and Fellow for the Royal Society and the Academy of Medical Sciences, among many other distinctions.

What are cookies?

    • Session cookies: type of cookies designed to collect and store data while the user accesses a web page. They are usually used to store information that only is kept to provide the service requested by the user on a single occasion (e.g. a list of products purchased).
    • Persistent cookies: type of cookies in which the data is still stored in the terminal and can be accessed and processed during a period defined by the person responsible for the cookie, which can range from a few minutes to several years.

  3. Cookies according to their purpose

    Depending on the purpose for which the data obtained through cookies are processed, we can distinguish between:

    • Technical cookies: those that allow the user to navigate through a web page, platform or application and the use of different options or services that exist in it, such as controlling traffic and data communication, identifying the session, access to restricted access parts, remember the elements that make up an order, perform the purchase process of an order, make a registration or participation in an event, use security elements during navigation, store content for the broadcast videos or sound or share content through social networks.
    • Personalization cookies: those that allow the user to access the service with some predefined general characteristics based on a series of criteria in the user's terminal, such as the language, the type of browser through which the user accesses the service, the regional configuration from where you access the service, etc.
    • Analytical cookies: those that allow the person responsible for them to monitor and analyse the behaviour of the users of the websites to which they are linked. The information collected through this type of cookies is used in the measurement of the activity of the websites, applications or platforms, and for the elaboration of navigation profiles of the users of said sites, applications and platforms, in order to introduce improvements in the analysis of the data of use made by the users of the service.
