Structure, function and regulation of GlyT2 variants associated to hyperekplexia
Hyperekplexia (OMIM 149400) is a rare sensorimotor syndrome potentially lethal in newborns. It is caused by defects in the inhibitory glycinergic neurotransmission due to mutations in some human genes such as the neuronal glycine transporter GlyT2 (SLC6A5), responsible for supplying glycine to the presynaptic terminal. In this project, the pathogenic mechanisms of GlyT2 mutations found in hyperekplexia patients will be analyzed in terms of the structure of the transporter, function, intracellular trafficking, interactome, regulation, as well as the consequences in embryonic or adult life. This study can guide future therapeutic approaches we wish to develop.

Inhibiting a novel interaction to sensitize breast cancer cells to radiotherapyes
The Carreira lab interrogates the mechanisms of the cell to preserve genome integrity using human BRCA2 protein as a model and the consequences of its mutation in breast cancer predisposition. In this project we will leverage the use of a newly identified partner of BRCA2 as a target to sensitize breast cancer cells to radio or chemotherapy. More information about our team at: Carreira-Lab
Candidates should hold a technical degree or a Masters degree in Biology, Biochemistry or related area. They are required to have at least 1-2 years of experience in molecular biology, biochemistry and/or mammalian cell culture work. Good microscopy skills will be valued. In addition, the candidate should have strong organizational skills, English proficiency and the ability to work independently.
