Nuestro laboratorio ha estado involucrado durante los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os en la caracterizaci\u00f3n del ecosistema \u00e1cido extremo del R\u00edo Tinto (Faja Pir\u00edtica Ib\u00e9rica, FPI), su diversidad, ecolog\u00eda y las posibles aplicaciones biotecnol\u00f3gicas de los distintos microorganismos aislados. Recientemente nos hemos interesado en el origen de este ambiente extremo caracterizando la diversidad responsable del funcionamiento de los ciclos biogeoqu\u00edmicos operando en el subsuelo profundo de la FPI. <\/p>\n

Esta \u00e1rea tiene los siguientes objetivos:<\/p>\n

– Acid\u00f3filos: ecolog\u00eda microbiana convencional, ecolog\u00eda molecular, biolog\u00eda molecular y biotecnolog\u00eda de ambientes \u00e1cidos extremos (biominer\u00eda, secuestro espec\u00edfico de metales, bio-mineralizaci\u00f3n y fito-remediaci\u00f3n). Este objetivo est\u00e1 fundamentalmente interesado en la exploraci\u00f3n de posibles aplicaciones biotecnol\u00f3gicas de los microorganismos acid\u00f3filos, la mayor\u00eda relacionados con la recuperaci\u00f3n de metales a partir de minerales y de aguas contaminadas. <\/p>\n

– Geomicrobiolog\u00eda del subsuelo de la Faja Pir\u00edtica Ib\u00e9rica (IPB): caracterizaci\u00f3n del bio-reactor subterr\u00e1neo responsable de las condiciones extremas detectadas en la cuenca del R\u00edo Tinto. El desarrollo de este objetivo comporta la identificaci\u00f3n de los microorganismos involucrados en los ciclos biogeoqu\u00edmicos (C, N, S y Fe) operativos en el subsuelo de la IBP. Los microorganismos reductores de nitrato han sido identificados como responsables de la oxidaci\u00f3n del i\u00f3n ferroso en condiciones anaerobias estrictas, facilitando el ataque qu\u00edmico a la gran concentraci\u00f3n de sulfuros met\u00e1licos existentes en la IPB, generando las condiciones extremas detectadas en la cuenca del Tinto. <\/p>\n

– Caracterizaci\u00f3n geomicrobiol\u00f3gica de ambientes extremos como modelos de habitabilidad de inter\u00e9s astrobiol\u00f3gico: Los siguientes ecosistemas est\u00e1n siendo estudiados en nuestro grupo: R\u00edo Tinto, Espa\u00f1a (an\u00e1logo de Marte); lago salado de Uyuni, Bolivia (an\u00e1logo de Europa); lago hipersalino de Tirez, Espa\u00f1a (an\u00e1logo de Europa) y Dallol en la depresi\u00f3n del Danakil, Etiop\u00eda (an\u00e1logo de Marte). Este objetivo persigue la caracterizaci\u00f3n de distintos ambientes extremos como modelos de vida en distintos planetas y lunas del sistema solar. Esta investigaci\u00f3n est\u00e1 interesada en conocer los l\u00edmites de la vida y caracterizar ecosistemas an\u00e1logos terrestres con el fin de preparar futuras misiones de exploraci\u00f3n espacial. <\/p>\n
