Trabajamos en prote\u00ednas de poxvirus que modulan las respuestas inmunitarias e inflamatorias del hu\u00e9sped. Caracterizamos prote\u00ednas de poxvirus secretadas por c\u00e9lulas infectadas que interact\u00faan con el interfer\u00f3n de tipo I, el factor de necrosis tumoral o las quimiocinas, y modulan su actividad. Tambi\u00e9n trabajamos en un mecanismo v\u00edrico que bloquea la deteccci\u00f3n de ADN (poxina\/schlafen) e impide la activaci\u00f3n de la inducci\u00f3n del interfer\u00f3n de tipo I. Comprobamos la contribuci\u00f3n de estas prote\u00ednas virales a la patog\u00e9nesis en un modelo de infecci\u00f3n en rat\u00f3n (mousepox). <\/p>\n

Comprender el mecanismo de acci\u00f3n de estas prote\u00ednas v\u00edricas aporta informaci\u00f3n sobre la funci\u00f3n del sistema inmunitario y nuevas estrategias para controlar la respuesta inmunitaria. Utilizamos esta informaci\u00f3n para desarrollar nuevos enfoques terap\u00e9uticos antiinflamatorios que podamos llevar a la cl\u00ednica, para bloquear las respuestas inflamatorias que causan enfermedades humanas. <\/p>\n

Nuestros proyectos sobre metagen\u00f3mica viral han reconstruido la historia natural de los aislados del virus ectromelia causantes de brotes de viruela del rat\u00f3n en instalaciones de estabulaci\u00f3n de todo el mundo y han proporcionado la primera secuencia gen\u00f3mica de un aislado natural. Los estudios sobre los herpesvirus demostraron que el virus del herpes simple 1 (VHS-1) y el VHS-2 generan una diversidad mayor de la esperada para los virus ADN. El VHS-2, que infecta la mucosa genital, genera m\u00e1s variantes que el VHS-1, que infecta la mucosa oronasal, y esto puede haber contribuido a la divergencia evolutiva de estos virus que se adaptan a nichos anat\u00f3micos diferentes. Ampliamos nuestros proyectos de metagen\u00f3mica viral ambiental a la identificaci\u00f3n de nuevos virus en valles secos ant\u00e1rticos, sedimentos lacustres ant\u00e1rticos y \u00e1rticos, y muestras de agua de ecosistemas alpinos en el Parque Nacional de Ordesa y Monte Perdido, en los Pirineos. Estos estudios pueden identificar propiedades comunes de virus que habitan en regiones polares y alpinas, ecosistemas extremos similares separados geogr\u00e1ficamente. <\/p>\n

La pandemia COVID19 ha ilustrado la importancia de la transmisi\u00f3n de virus por v\u00eda a\u00e9rea y la necesidad de mejorar la calidad microbiol\u00f3gica del aire. Durante la pandemia de COVID19 optimizamos una tecnolog\u00eda de filtraci\u00f3n para capturar virus aerotransportados y la hemos utilizado para monitorizar la presencia de SARS-CoV-2 en el aire de los hospitales y para secuenciar genomas completos de virus presentes en muestras de aire. Estamos ampliando estos estudios a otros virus respiratorios humanos. Utilizando esta tecnolog\u00eda, demostramos la presencia del virus mpox (viruela del mono) en muestras de aire durante el reciente brote internacional de mpox de 2022, lo que sugiere que la transmisi\u00f3n a\u00e9rea puede desempe\u00f1ar un papel en futuros brotes de mpox. En colaboraci\u00f3n con tecn\u00f3logos, desarrollamos nuevos m\u00e9todos de muestreo de virus aerotransportados y para la inactivaci\u00f3n de virus en el aire. <\/p>\n
