Encarna Mart\u00ednez-Salas, ha identificado un nuevo mecanismo por el cual la prote\u00edna\u00a0Gemin5\u00a0regula la producci\u00f3n de prote\u00ednas en las c\u00e9lulas en respuesta a situaciones de &#8220;estr\u00e9s&#8221;, como una infecci\u00f3n viral.<\/p>\n<p>El trabajo, publicado en la revista cient\u00edfica\u00a0<em>RNA Biology<\/em>, muestra que Gemin5 puede detectar la presencia de\u00a0RNA de doble cadena\u00a0\u2014una se\u00f1al t\u00edpica de virus\u2014 y, en respuesta, sufre modificaciones qu\u00edmicas (llamadas\u00a0fosforilaciones) que cambian su forma y funci\u00f3n. Estos cambios le permiten unirse con m\u00e1s eficacia tanto al RNA como a los\u00a0ribosomas, que son las &#8220;f\u00e1bricas&#8221; donde se producen las prote\u00ednas.<\/p>\n<p>Si esta activaci\u00f3n no ocurre correctamente, Gemin5 pierde estabilidad y su capacidad de controlar la producci\u00f3n de prote\u00ednas se ve comprometida, algo que podr\u00eda tener consecuencias importantes en enfermedades como el\u00a0c\u00e1ncer, donde estos procesos suelen estar alterados.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLo fascinante de Gemin5 es que act\u00faa como un sensor molecular. Es capaz de adaptarse a se\u00f1ales de estr\u00e9s y decidir si se produce m\u00e1s o menos prote\u00edna en funci\u00f3n del entorno celular\u201d, explica la\u00a0Dra.
