The award recognizes a distinguished scientific career that has made a decisive contribution to the advancement of cellular and molecular biology.<\/p>\n<p>The National Research Awards represent the highest honor bestowed by the Government of Spain on researchers with established careers and international standing. In this edition, ten awards were presented\u2014one for each major field of knowledge\u2014as well as ten National Research Awards for Young Researchers, intended to recognize emerging scientific talent.<\/p>\n<p>According to the jury\u2019s decision, Crisanto Guti\u00e9rrez has been recognized for his fundamental contributions to our understanding of the mechanisms that regulate cell proliferation, DNA replication, and the maintenance of genomic stability\u2014research that has had a profound impact on cellular and molecular biology.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Discovering how cells protect their genetic information<\/h3>\n<p>Crisanto Guti\u00e9rrez\u2019s research has shed light on some of the fundamental mechanisms that regulate how cells function. His work has helped unravel how cells accurately replicate their DNA before dividing, how they control the cell cycle, and how they maintain the stability of their genetic material\u2014processes that are essential for the development of organisms and for preventing the onset of diseases.<\/p>\n<p>One of his major contributions has been to demonstrate that DNA replication depends not only on the machinery responsible for copying the genome, but also on the organization of chromatin\u2014the complex formed by DNA and the proteins that package it. His research has revealed how the structure of the genome influences when and where replication begins\u2014a key insight for understanding how cells preserve the integrity of their genetic information.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, his group has uncovered mechanisms that coordinate cell proliferation with the development of organisms and has identified processes that are conserved throughout evolution, from plants to animals. These discoveries have made Crisanto Guti\u00e9rrez an international leader in the study of the cell cycle and genome stability\u2014two fundamental areas for understanding both the normal development of living organisms and the origin of diseases associated with alterations in these processes, including cancer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Recognition for the CBM<\/h3>\n<p>The awarding of this National Prize recognizes Crisanto Guti\u00e9rrez\u2019s scientific leadership and highlights the research excellence of the CBM, one of Spain\u2019s leading centers dedicated to basic research in molecular biology and biomedicine.<\/p>\n<p>With this award, the CBM has now received a total of eight National Research Awards granted to researchers at the center throughout its history. In addition to Crisanto Guti\u00e9rrez,\u00a0<strong>Severo Ochoa, Antonio Garc\u00eda Bellido, Margarita Salas, Gin\u00e9s Morata, Jes\u00fas \u00c1vila, Joan Modolell, and Mar\u00eda Victoria Llorens Mart\u00edn<\/strong>\u00a0have also been honored with these awards.
