SBIO (Biocomputing and omics integration facility)
The SBIO, or Biocomputing and omics integration facility, arises from the strategic need to centralize multi-omics data analysis and macromolecular structure modeling into a single facility at the CBM. We are the center’s reference unit dedicated exclusively to providing support in bioinformatics, computational biology, and data analysis for our research groups and external entities.
Our goal is to devise analytical solutions tailored to the specific needs of each project, facilitating the management and interpretation of complex biological data.
We accompany researchers throughout the entire life cycle of their data: from experimental design, data analysis, and source integration, to the management and stewardship of results. We help tell the biological story hidden within the data in a clear, rigorous, and reproducible way.
Service areas
The technical and analytical capabilities of the SBIO are structured into the following main areas:
- Analysis and integration of omics data: Processing, statistical analysis, and pipeline development for the interpretation of massive datasets (NGS, proteomics, lipidomics, etc.), including the integration of diverse multi-omics data sources.
- Analysis and modeling of systems and biomolecules: Mechanistic and predictive characterization at the molecular level. Integration of sequence analysis and phylogeny with the structural modeling of proteins and complexes, as well as molecular dynamics simulations and the evaluation of interactions and mutations.
- Analysis of microscopy data: Computational support for the advanced processing and quantification of image data, in direct coordination with the Advanced Optical Microscopy Service (SMOA).
Transversal support and infrastructure
The SBIO also offers a series of general research support services:
- Advising and experimental design: Technical support prior to the execution of an experiment (technology selection, sample size) and assistance in drafting technical reports for grant proposals.
- Data management and stewardship: We act as authorized brokers for the secure submission of sequences to official European repositories (ENA, EGA), an essential requirement for publishing results.
- Computational infrastructure: Management and provision of access to high-performance scientific computing resources (in-house clusters and access to CSIC nodes such as NodoBio and DRAGO).
- Training: Organization of courses and custom technical training to empower researchers with autonomy in bioinformatics and statistical tools.
