Preclinical Biomedicine
Preclinical Biomedicine is a scientific service offering advisory and practical support for using the small animal experimentation equipment available at the CBMSO. The service is located in the CBMSO animal facility and aims to facilitate the preclinical research of the institute’s scientists.
The service also offers training and guidance on how to use the equipment, as well as counselling for data analysis and interpretation. The service staff are experienced and qualified in the field of preclinical biomedicine and can assist the researchers with their experimental design and execution.
The Preclinical Biomedicine service aims to provide high-quality and reliable services that meet the needs and expectations of the researchers, as well as the ethical and regulatory standards for animal research. The service is open to all researchers from the institute and external collaborators who are interested in using the equipment.

The service provides access to the following equipment:
- Mouse metabolic cages (PhenoMaster Metabolic Cages de TSE Systems and Comprehensive Lab Animal Monitoring System, CLAMS, for análisis): These cages allow the measurement of various metabolic parameters of mice, such as oxygen consumption, food and water intake, energy expenditure, body temperature and weight and activity.
- Mouse endoscope (COLOVIEW Mainz, Karl Storz): This device enables the visualization and manipulation of the mouse colon, such as fluid injections, and video recording in color.
- In vivo imaging systems (IVIS Lumina II and IVIS Spectrum): These systems allow the non-invasive imaging of living animals using different modalities, such as optical, fluorescence and bioluminescence.
- Element HT5 Veterinary Hematology Analyzer by Heska: a multi-channel analyzer utilizing laser flow cytometry, impedance technology, and colorimetric detection to rapidly and accurately determine red blood cell, white blood cell, and platelet parameters.
- Ultrasound system LOGIQ E r8 (GE Healthcare): mouse ultrasound and Doppler analyzer.
- Blood pressure analyzer BP-2000 (Visitech Systems): non-invasive blood pressure analysis system for up to 6 mice at a time.
The service also offers training and guidance on how to use the equipment, as well as counselling for data analysis and interpretation. The service staff are experienced and qualified in the field of preclinical biomedicine and can assist the researchers with their experimental design and execution.
